GSU CEO Ali AlShimmari Named “Energy Leader of the Year”

Ali AlShimmari, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Global South Utilities (GSU), as well as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yashil Energiya JV LLC, has been named “Energy Leader of the Year” at the Gulf Business Awards 2026.

The award recognises Ali AlShimmari’s leadership in developing and delivering high-impact energy infrastructure projects across emerging markets.

The year 2026 has brought significant international recognition for Ali AlShimmari. In August, the 50 MW Sakai Solar Power Plant, equipped with a 15 MWh battery energy storage system, was commissioned in the Central African Republic. During the inauguration ceremony, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra awarded Ali AlShimmari the rank of Commander of the Order of Central African Merit, the country’s highest civilian honour.

In September, President of the Union of the Comoros Azali Assoumani conferred upon him the title of Knight of the Order of the Green Crescent of the Comoros. The honour recognised his contribution to the development of renewable energy and the strengthening of the country’s electricity infrastructure. Solar power plants with a combined capacity of 20 MW and battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 16 MWh were constructed on the islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli. The project was financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and implemented by Masdar. Following honours from Chad and the Central African Republic, this became the third award Ali AlShimmari received from an African government within a single year.

GSU is a strategic partner of Yashil Energiya. The company’s experience in implementing major energy projects across emerging markets is also contributing to the development of green energy in Uzbekistan.

On behalf of the Yashil Energiya team, we sincerely congratulate Ali AlShimmari on these achievements and look forward to continuing our joint efforts towards a sustainable future for the energy sector.
