Uzbekistan Launches Major New Energy Facilities, the Largest of Their Kind in Central Asia
In connection with the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence, new power facilities with a total capacity of 2,423 MW have been commissioned across the country.
1,573 MW of thermal power generation, 300 MW of solar power, 200 MW of wind power, and 350 MW of energy storage systems. The total value of the projects is $1.7 billion.
In particular:
A 1,573 MW Thermal Power Plant Commissioned in Boyovut District, Syrdarya Region
The plant will generate 13 billion kWh of electricity annually. With an efficiency rate of 61.7%, it will save approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.
The project, with a total value of $900 million, was implemented through direct investment. It was commissioned in cooperation with a consortium comprising France’s EDF, Qatar’s Nebras Power, Japan’s Sojitz Corporation, and Kyuden International.
A 300 MW Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant and a 150 MW Energy Storage System Commissioned in Nurata District, Navoi Region
The project is valued at $390 million and was implemented in cooperation with China’s China Energy Overseas Investment.
Project impact: The facility will generate 657 million kWh of green electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 273,000 households. It will save 175 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent 377,000 tonnes of harmful emissions from being released into the atmosphere each year.
A 200 MW Wind Power Plant and a 100 MW Energy Storage System Commissioned in Karauzyak District, Republic of Karakalpakstan
The project, valued at $263 million, was implemented in cooperation with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power.
As a result, the project will generate 701 million kWh of green electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 292,000 households. It will save 187 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent 403,000 tonnes of harmful emissions from being released into the atmosphere.
A 100 MW Energy Storage System Commissioned in Uychi District, Namangan Region
The project, valued at $110 million, was implemented by China’s China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd.
Project impact: The system makes it possible to store electricity twice a day for two hours at a capacity of 100 MW, providing a total storage capacity of 200 MWh. The stored energy can then be used during periods of peak demand to ensure the stability and reliability of the power grid.
